It’s a great honor to stand here to give my daily report. Today, I‘d like to introduce my charming hometown: Anhui to you all.
My hometown, Anhui, a province of the People's Republic of China, is located in eastern China in the lower reach of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River; it borders Jiangsu to the east, Zhejiang to the southeast, Jiangxi to the south, Hubei to the southwest, Henan to the northwest, and for a tiny section of Shandong in the north. The province covers an area of around 139,590 km2 and the capital is Hefei. And the population of the province is as large as 67.408 million (by 2008).
The name "Anhui" derives from the names of two cities in south Anhui, Anqing and Huizhou (now Huangshan City). The abbreviation for Anhui is "Wǎn", because there were historically a State of Wan, a Mount Wan (now Mount Tianzhu), and a Wan River in the province. It is generally believed that Anhui has a typical transitional warm-temperate to subtropical climate characteristic: it is warm in spring, hot in summer, cool in fall and cold in winter.
In Anhui province, there are many places of tourist interest, such as Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui - Xidi and Hongcun (World Heritage Site), Mount Huang (World Heritage Site), Mount Jiuhua, Mount Qiyun, Mount Tianzhu, Old Town of Tunxi and so on.
Apart from its irresistible sceneries, the local cuisine is also well worth your trying. As a matter of fact, Huizhou cuisine plays a very important part in China's Eight Major Schools of Cooking. They not only have an attractive out looking, but also have an unforgettable savor, believe it or not, once you have tried it, you will always want to try it again, yes, over and over again, and hardly, you will be tired of them. Having introduced its delicious food, now I would like to show you its rich cultures. In fact, Anhui spans many geographical and cultural regions. The northern, flatter parts of the province, along the river Huaihe and further north, are most akin to neighboring provinces like Henan and Shandong. In contrast, the southern, hilly parts of the province are more similar in culture and dialect to other southern, hilly provinces, like Zhejiang and Jiangxi.
Huangmeixi, which originated in the environs of Anqing in southwestern Anhui, is a form of traditional Chinese opera popular across China. Huiju, a form of traditional opera originating in the Huizhou-speaking areas of southern Anhui, is one of the major precursors of Beijing Opera; in the 1950s Huiju (which had disappeared) was revived. Luju is a type of traditional opera found across central Anhui, from east to west.
Anhui has a high concentration of traditional products related to calligraphy: Xuanzhou (today Xuancheng) and Huizhou (today Huangshan City) are revered for producing Xuan Paper and Hui Ink, respectively, which are traditionally considered the best types of paper and ink for Chinese calligraphy. She County is famous for the She Ink-stone, which is one of the most preferred types of ink-stones (a required tool in traditional calligraphy).
Last but not least, I would like to tell you that whenever it comes to Anhui, nobody can ignore a famous university, yes, that is, University of Science & Technology of China (USTC), a university, which is situated in the Southwest part of Hefei, is a renowned university at home and abroad.
